randomplay

this is a piece for 8 CD players. each layer is a set of identical CDs that are all played simultaneously in different CD players set on andom or shuffle. one group ran the length of the piece and included voices of the performers of Carol McDowell's Translation Project (Eko, Roxanne, Shyamala, Jack and Nelli), time-stretched tones from a Javanese bonang, and the booming resonance of a UCLA dance building bathroom during a clogging class upstairs. the second group came in after a few minutes and included simple mono-rhythmic tracks from various bonang and the sound in our apartment while they replaced the roof. the last group came in shortly thereafter and included sounds of our dog's breathing up close and construction sounds.

it's about layering multiple copies of the same audio track with inconsistent firing times (due to the human touch to start everything and the varying track change times of various CD decks) and the indiscernible results that follow.
