i found my heart in Max/MSP and the *~ object. it is the object you use to multiply two signals together, and that's all i knew until i read the Computer Music book by Charles Dodge and Thomas Jerse. now i know it is ring modulation and it creates a dense frequency spectrum, often rendering the sounds unrecognizable. it is a nice tidy package for shredding any two soundfiles at any speed.
one of my favorite pairs is the statements made by George W Bush and Osama bin Laden after the bombing of Afghanistan had begun. others are whale songs and cengceng samples (a bronze marching-band-cymbal-like Balinese instrument), and a bonang roll (javanese bronze gong- like instrument but smaller, played in this case with a string-wrapped stick in simple accelerating mono-rhythmic lines) and an ambient recording of an outdoor Lhasang ceremony. in all of these cases i was exploring opposite or disparate pairs, tho i guess you could say Bush and BinLaden are cut from a similar cloth.
