Phill Niblock is a New York-based minimalist intermedia artist using music, film, photography, video and computers, and director of Experimental Intermedia, a foundation born in the flames of 1968's barricade-hopping. He makes thick, loud drones of music, filled with microtones of instrumental timbres which generate many other tones in the performance space. Simultaneously, he presents films / videos which look at the movement of people working, or computer driven black and white abstract images floating through time. He has been a maverick presence on the fringes of the avant garde ever since. GX Jupitter-Larsen is an artist, based in Hollywood, California, who's been active in a number of underground art scenes since 1979. Jupitter-Larsen has been involved in punk rock, mail art, cassette culture, the noise music scene, and zine culture. During the 1990s he was the sound designer for the performances of Mark Pauline's Survival Research Laboratories. AMK is an American experimental musician who has been active since the early 80s, and created his own label Banned Production which has hundreds of releases. "I like to be involved with the things I do. One of the reasons I don’t do many pro CD releases is that I’m not involved in it every step of the way. When I cook, I know what I eat and how I want to make it to taste. Cutting up records is just fun. I guess the connection that can be drawn through all that is that I like to control things as much as I can. I don’t work all that well with others in a lot of ways. Damion Romero is a Los Angeles based practitioner of power acoustics and intense low-level sound manipulation. He has recorded as Speculum Fight, and collaborated with MSBR, Astro, Spencer Yeh, and many more. He is a consistent source of fascinating buzz and drone and somehow manages to translate inherently physical and spatial sound amazingly onto analog and digitally recorded media. Without formal training in music and art, Gen Ken Montgomery has been involved in experimental music and art based in new York City since 1978. Montgomery founded the Generations Unlimited and co-founded the Pogus Productions labels of experimental music, and in 1989, he founded Generator, the first Sound Art gallery in New York City. Montgomery has been a guest curator and surreptitiously assisted other curators for a variety of projects specializing in Sound Art and experimental music since. Vertonen has been the solo project of Blake Edwards since 1991. Using a wide array of source material, including custom-built pedals, hand altered records, an oversized Russian synthesizer, shortwave radio, and field recordings, his audio explorations have included musique concrete, drones, harsh noise, and off-kilter lurching rhythms. His most recent work has focused on using dead and dying media to accentuate communication and its various limitations / frequent failings. Edwards has received four City of Chicago arts grants in recognition of his work, and he also runs the experimental music label CIP, releasing works by both new and well-known artists including Z'EV, Leticia Castaneda, Wolf Eyes, Joe Colley, and Brutum Fulmen. MV Carbon is a Brooklyn based artist and musician who uses tape machines, voice, electric cello, field recordings, and hand built electronics in her work. She has performed nationally and internationally with her solo work as well as in collaborations with a fine array of musicians. Crank Sturgeon has been active in performance, installation, and sound art since 1992. A comical conceptualist, Crank blends pun and the profane into noisy, happy accidents. Accompanied by ridiculous costuming, athletic endurance, and audience participation, the end result is often a recipe that embraces the loud, the wet, and the celebratory. David Linton (born Newburgh NY 1956) is a Time based multiple media artist traveling the vectors of sound, subculture, and signal flow. He has been active in the downtown NYC experimental arts community for over 30 years. With his "Bicameral Research Sound & Projection System" (2004) Linton aims to make vibrational wave induced perceptual energy states manifest by deploying interconnected measures of electric sound & pulsing light in live action with hand manipulated objects in physical (live camera) space. He employs an integrated recursive analog audio-video feedback system of his own perversely simple design modulated by freehand intervention to deliver vigorous eye, ear, and - sometimes - body shaking realtime audio visual performances from which a kind of retro-tech animist ritual "medicine show" emerges where subject and object blur. Visual/sound artist Bruce Tovsky began painting at the age of 7 and started playing with tape recorders at the age of 10. After earning an MFA degree in Multimedia from Rutgers University in 1979 he began showing his video work across the USA, Europe and Japan. The late 70’s to mid 80’s also saw him involved in the downtown NYC film and music scene, where he produced records, made videos, and did live sound for Liquid Liquid, Model Citizens, Del Byzanteens and Dog Eat Dog among many others. In the 90's he also collaborated with several downtown NYC choreographers, with performances at Lincoln Center, Joyce Theater, The Kitchen and other venues around the world. C. Spencer Yeh was born in Taipei, Taiwan, studied film at Northwestern University in Chicago IL, repped Cincinnati OH for many years, and is now based in Brooklyn NY. He is recognized for his musical project Burning Star Core, as well as many other individual and collaborative artistic activities. He has worked with artists such as Tony Conrad, Mika Tajima and New Humans, Okkyung Lee, Ben Hall and Don Dietrich (as The New Monuments), Carlos Giffoni, Paul Flaherty, Aaron Dilloway, Aaron Moore, Thurston Moore, and Jandek, and has performed at events such as SONAR, Densités, All Tomorrow's Parties, and Frieze Arts Fair. Katherine Liberovskaya is a video/media artist based in Montreal, Canada and New York City. Tom Grimley is a Los Angeles-based music producer, engineer and experimental music composer. He studied music composition at Loyola Marymount University. A former member of the bands: Waldo The Dog Faced Boy, The Rentals, Slug, Jacknife, The Benett Band, Recess & more, Grimley co-founded the defunct record label WIN Records with Devin Sarno in 1989. The label was founded with the goal to “release records from friends who were making music that we believed in and felt should be heard." Grimley also ran Poop Alley Studios from 1991-1997, recording hundreds of L.A. bands.
