Bassett/Weisblat

Marcia Bassett & Barry Weisblat duo collaboration began as a Casio keyboard improvisational unit. Since their first meeting Bassett has fully immersed into the wide world of electronic circuits and devices while equally exploring the light and darkness with command and vulnerability. Weisblat has pared his homemade/adapted electronics setup to essential tools which get to the essence of electricity and vibrating bodies - pushing electronic sound into the room and confronting and synthesizing it there. This is not professional music, but rather communication between friends where the ideas come together in space and the bodies get left behind. Bassett and Weisblat have joined up with much larger improvisational group ensembles and frequently perform as a trio with Andrew Lafkas since 2012.

Bloater

Heavy drones and abrasive electronics. Interests: Attraction & repulsion; Indeterminate pitches and tempos; Kinetic/static tension (energy drones); Sound pressure vs. the body; Brooding; Scrambled media; Subwoofers. Originally conceived as a freeform noise duo in 2008 with guitarist Steve Smith (END RESULT, Chicago), BLOATER has come into sharper focus as a solo project in recent years. “…there is something orchestral, awkward and pleasantly disturbing about the way it crawls out of the speakers.” (Manchester Music webzine; UK) “…raw, palpable and direct.” (The Sound Projector webzine; UK). Bonnie Baxter

Producer, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist. Bonnie Baxter also is Kill Alters with Nicos Kennedy and Hisham Bharoocha. On her own, as Baxter compresses her practice down to a small rig of Korg Electribe drum machines, an iPad, and her voice, she maintains the ferocity and body-animating rhythmic sensibilities of her collaborative work while pushing her live-recorded compositions to towering climaxes of ego-erasing noise and vocal catharsis. Baxter’s solo work contains flashes of her own voice as a child: urging her mother, at one point, to “ask me how Satan started,” in a moment poised somewhere between Exorcist-style family horror and adorable chipmunk voiced curiosity. This dynamic provides a fitting lens for Bonnie Baxter’s entire practice, balanced between terror and glee, between the weight of human depravity and the sense of joy and fulfillment that stems from confronting the forces of evil in society and within oneself.

Dreamcrusher

" Playing a fringe yet stylized version of noise and industrial that is intelligent, expressive, and powerfully physical, Dreamcrusher is the solo musical endeavour of multidisciplinary artist Luwayne Glass- hailing from Wichita, Kansas. Formed in 2003, reveling in the aughts of myspace, tumblr, soundcloud and other social media sites, Dreamcrusher began as a project of self-discovery and self-release while contained in a queer, gender non-binary (they/them pronouns, not he/him or she/her), black body in America's bible belt. Creating over thirty releases, splits, extended plays and singles all before 2014, without ever releasing a full-length album, each project shows a very individual growth while sitting in many scenes that often don't lend themselves to explicit artistic morphing. The Dreamcrusher project and their releases have become increasingly more personal, confrontational, concise and challenging. After migrating from Kansas to New York City, their success hit new heights diving headfirst into the American live DIY scene. Dreamcrusher continues to alter the overwhelmingly rigid aesthetic of 'noise' and underground scenes by expanding the meaning of 'genre', and in many ways completely distorting 'genre' to form to them rather than the reverse. They choose not to underestimate the intelligence of their audience by challenging them at every sea change. " Photo credit: Nathan Bajar http://nathanbajar.com

Intense sound study for those seeking the comfort of harsh noise bliss.

JH1.FS3

JH1.FS3, the Los Angeles based duo of Frederikke Hoffmeier and Jesse Sanes, delineates a more subtle “cinema of the ear” than the abrasive sound palettes found in their individual discographies of extreme music. Here, their words are spoken amidst a savvy re-assembly of 20th century avant-sonics: music concrète, technique extension, and pure electronic sound. Their live sets - and recent albums on Sweden's iDEAL Recordings and Dais Records - utilize material they synthesized while in residence at Stockholm's Elektronmusikstudion EMS and hi-res field recordings they somehow smuggle out of REM sleep.

JoAnn McNeil

While the world at large continues its sluggish, incremental awakening to the embodied artistic brilliance of black women, it would be easy to say that JoAnn McNeil has quietly birthed a collection of living sound and sight fully immersed in the lived-in dystopia that many black women experience on this very same world. The noise of it all (and, yes, in fact “noise” as evidenced by pieces like “Invisa Cell” with its Suzanne Cianni-esque dirge or the ambiance of “Blind Eye” and its Top 40 dance hit in a post Weyland-Yutani world) suggests that nothing from this oeuvre could materialize quietly. Yet, here we are, finally witnessing an artist gently exploding (if you will) from the strange environs of her birthplace of St. Louis (as documented in the photography series “Broken Homes”) and onto stages, galleries, and afro-futurist festivals from St. Louis to Philadelphia.

Though it must be said: JoAnn McNeil is not a noise musician or sonic landscaper, but a being kemetically tethered to this world, speaking in vibrations and alien choral hums. JoAnn McNeil's photography and design are not washed out moments of contemplative exhibitionism, they're active sigil work fused together from a shattered kaleidoscope and pixelated cels mimeographed from Octavia Butler's lost visions. While McNeil's love of creating cut-n-paste soundtracks from glitches that have returned from space with modular synths and various apps remains, it is in the synthesis of the visual, the kinetic, and the spiritual that empowers her work. In the presence of such visionary work as the “Ghost Sheets” series where physiological representations of depression and internal conflicts are navigated through stark, digitally manipulated photographs, it becomes clear: JoAnn McNeil is not a multi-disciplinary artist, she's a self-contained, time displaced spirit vessel with dials set to liberation. - Alex Smith

King Vision Ultra

King Vision Ultra is the sound ritual project of New York City native & PTP (Purple Tape Pedigree) collective/imprint head, Geng. A handful have called it "doom metal meets '90s hip-hop," but one time someone went further to say, "Dystopia over old RZA beats fed through a RAT pedal." KVU is a channeling and exploration of the spiritual archive, a language forged from abuse/violence, sleep paralysis, aquaphobia, and the mental state. KVU live is the sharing of personal ills with the other entity in the room. On Pain Of Mind - his debut album (Ascetic House, March 2018) - this practice is carried out via frequency and cassette experimentations as dialogue and sampled loops forge a narrative on enslavement, both industrialized and self-imposed.

Madison Greenstone & John McCowen

Madison Greenstone is a clarinetist currently based in San Diego. Her creative practice spans improvisation, noise music, contemporary classical music, and band-like collaboration with other performer-composers. She is currently learning how to play modular synthesizer and developing a performance practice integrating electronics and small hand-made instruments. She has recently performed at the Darmstadt Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, as part of the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra, and at ISSUE Project Room. Current projects include Hermetic Art Party (a sound and light immersive composition and performance practice with Anthony Vine and Katy Gilmore) and Chromatic Heartbreaker (a sometimes-noisy sometimes-dancy solo electronics journey).

John McCowen is a New York based composer and performer whose work focuses on extending the possibilities of the clarinet. John embraces long-form drones, difference tones, and beating harmonics as a means to extrude the dimensions within - treating the clarinet as an acoustic synthesizer. John was an original member of the Chicago avant-rock group, Wei Zhongle, where he performed on clarinet/electronics. His discography includes releases on Edition Wandelweiser, International Anthem, Astral Spirits, NNA Tapes, New Atlantis, and others.

She uses found sounds, voice, field recordings, power tools, noise sequenced through distortion, reverb and hardware synthesizers to create textural soundscapes that vary in structure and duration. In addition to performance and DJ work, she has also done a number of extended sound compositions and sonic programming/design work for experiential spaces and installations. Thematically, her work delves into motifs of loss, repressed desires, occultism & anti-capitalism.

Pedestrian Deposit

Reverse tension, abrasive composition. The duo of Shannon A. Kennedy and Jonathan Borges is best described as visceral and narrative; informed by elements of experimental sound, harsh noise, musique concrete, neo-classical, dark ambiance and performance art but is not beholden to any one genre. It is best experienced live and in the moment to understand it’s full scope. PD maintains an adherence to personal integrity and independence -- both with live appearances and recordings, which are issued through Monorail Trespassing, the record label Borges has operated for nearly 20 years. Their refusal to play into the corporate re-structuring of the music underground remains a consistent mindset. Instrumentation consists of physically activated, sculptural instruments made of wood, metal, strings and springs, and gutter electronics.

SICKNESS

SICKNESS is the harsh noise project of Chris Goudreau started in 1988. Beginning as straight-forward, full blast, harsh electronic purity; SICKNESS is at its heart is contrast and collection of harsh noise. The sound is filled with quick cuts between sources, hard rapid fire loops, sheet metal crash, harsh electronics/feedback, and reverb space. The sound is active. It is seeking to push, pull, or shove the listener into the theme of each piece moving them as the sounds shift, move and flow. Combining modular synth, found sound, noise and tension Goudreau creates a moving soundscape where the listener is an active piece in the puzzle. Photo Credit: Méryll Ampe

The Haters

The East Village, 1979 and what would be the first ever performance by something called The Haters. With nearly 450 performances around the world, and just about as many CD and record releases, after 40 years of countless complete and incomplete metamorphoses, both with cast members and performance techniques and strategies, The Haters return to New York to perform at this year’s Ende Tymes.

Artist couple GX Jupitter-Larsen and Jessica King are the driving force behind The Haters. GX involved since the start, Jessica joined in 2004 when she created a dress made of sandpaper for a performance in Venice Beach CA. GX pressed a live microphone all over the dress being worn by Jessica till the mic were destroyed.

Their current performance piece, entitled the Totimorphous Ubiety Guide (TUG), centers around a hand-held analog device that requires two people to operate. While GX handles the controls, Jessica pulls and pushes on the machine’s rigid spring that extends out one side. Every movement on the spring directly affects the sounds available to the controls.

Thomas Dimuzio

Thomas Dimuzio has worked solo and collaboratively with artists including Dimmer, Chris Cutler, Fred Frith, Nick Didkovsky, Matmos, ISIS, Wobbly, Illusion of Safety, Due Process, Voice of Eye, Negativland, 5uu’s, and Mickey Hart. Dimuzio's extensive discography includes releases on RéR Megacorp, Seeland, RRRecords, Asphodel, No Fun Records, Drone Records, Record Label Records, Melon Expander and Isounderscore, while his Discogs.com page reads like a Who’s Who of the underground noise and experimental music world. “Attending a Thomas Dimuzio performance is like lying underneath a web of freeway bridges with your eyes closed; blocking out all visuals except the brief daggers of light that flicker with each passing car. There is a sense of probable dread — metal, wooden or cigarette debris from the vehicles could fly off and injure you — but also one of hypnotized calm, thanks to the amplified hum of Michelin and Goodyear against greased concrete. Dimuzio, a San Francisco electro-noise composer, seemingly replicates this experience with massive, body-vibrating drones punctuated by abrupt, skreeing hits of white noise. His improvised performances — usually performed with guitar feedback and short-wave radio files processed with a laptop and CDJ player-explore the gray area between tranquility and disarray, and they can draw your imagination into a wilderness it will refuse to leave, even when your nerves are shot by so many conflicting emotions.” — Pitchfork Media

Victoria Shen

Victoria Shen is a visual artist and musician hailing from San Francisco and working out of New England. Shen's sound practice is concerned with the spatiality/physicality of sound and its relationship to the human body. Shen’s music floods its location acting as a form of sculpture. Her music features analog modular synthesizers (Flower Electronics), contact microphones, and other hand-built electronics. These instruments are designed to electronically reproduce chaotic systems, systems which are highly sensitive to small changes in their initial parameters. The resulting music eschews conventions in harmony and rhythm in favor of the extreme textures and gestural tones. Shen has performed solo across North America, Western Europe, and Japan as Victoria Shen and under the pseudonym Evicshen as well as with the duo TRIM in North America and the UK. She has also been an artist in residence at Elektronmusikstudion EMS Stockholm, Sweden and WORM Rotterdam Netherlands.
